    Hazel McCallion

Special Adviser on Municipal Affairs of Ontario

Hazel was a small-town girl from Quebec that went on to become the leader of Mississauga, the sixth largest city in Canada. Today, she is an iconic and beloved Canadian figure. A businesswoman, athlete, philanthropist and politician, she is best known for serving as Mississauga’s Mayor for 12 consecutive terms from 1978 to 2014. She is a champion of volunteerism and investing in the community. “Hurricane Hazel” continues to break down barriers wherever she goes, paving the way for women in politics, promoting international relations, and serving as a role model and inspiration for all.

As Mayor, Hazel helped Mississauga grow from a sleepy suburb to the vibrant city it is today. Her dedication, pragmatism, decisiveness, and attention to detail won her widespread admiration. More than that, her genuine love and care for the people of Mississauga has always shone through. Hazel has
worked tirelessly to make the world a better place, fundraising and volunteering and urging others to do the same. At 101 years old (and counting!), Hazel is still active and engaged with the community.
