The Canadian economy and by extension the commercial real estate that houses it, is in the throes of recovery following a once in a generation pandemic. While all eyes are bracing for a cyclical return to pre-pandemic market conditions, behavioural and other secular changes brought on by the pandemic, or in many cases accelerated by the pandemic, will have varying impacts on the near term direction of office, industrial and retail property markets. This presentation will address both the challenges and opportunities brought on by these forces.

    With over twenty years of business experience, Carl Gomez is a well-known Canadian economist and respected investment professional specializing in real estate. He was appointed Chief Economist and Head of Market Analytics for CoStar Group in November 2020.

    Carl was formally Senior Vice President, Research & Strategy for QuadReal Property Group. Before that, Carl worked at Bentall Kennedy, a leading real estate investment management firm as Senior Vice President & Chief Economist. Carl has also worked on Bay Street as a Senior Economist, first with RBC Financial Group and then with TD Bank Financial Group, specializing in macroeconomic forecasting and real estate market analysis. He is a nationally recognized speaker and media commentator on financial issues and real estate related developments, with his views having appeared in the Globe & Mail, Bloomberg, Wall Street Journal, and CBC News among others.

    Carl holds an M.A. in Financial Economics from the University of Victoria and an Honours B.A. (Economics) from the University of Western Ontario. Carl has been an active board member for the Toronto Association of Business Economists and is a part time lecturer at Schulich Business School.
